New captain kicks off the new year at Windwhistle Golf Club, Chard
8:30am Monday 6th February 2012

THE new captain of Windwhistle Golf Club, Peter Hamilton-Walsh, kicked off the new year at the club with the annual Captain’s Drive-In.
Peter was joined by ladies captain Shirley Medcraff, junior captain Ian Clark and the seniors’ vice-captain, Alan Chance, who was deputising for the unavailable seniors captain Norman Markby.
A large crowd of club members and supporters gathered at the first tee to see the four drive-off in the traditional opener to the golfing calendar at Windwhistle.
The course was designed in 1932 by J.H. Taylor, five times Open Champion, as a nine-hole course. Twenty-three years later and Leonard Fisher took over the course and extended it to 18 holes after acquiring additional land.
It is now one of the most well used and popular courses in the Somerset area and has a healthy membership with a growing junior section.
The club’s head professional, Liam Clarke, arrived at Windwhistle last year having been a PGA professional since 2002.
London-born Liam started his career at Sandy Lodge Golf Club in Hertfordshire where he achieved a scratch handicap at the age of 18 and represented both Middlesex and Hertfordshire at county level.
He is looking to nurture young local golfing talent and offers coaching sessions. Golf lessons are also available for older players.
The club has its own well-stocked club shop and clubhouse, which can cater for a variety of social functions.
