Egg shackling and more besides in South Somerset
4:10pm Tuesday 7th February 2012
TALES from the Chard and Ilminster News area feature in a new, nostalgia-packed book.
Customs in Somerset includes local traditions still alive locally such as egg shackling at Shepton Beauchamp, Punkie Night at Hinton St George and the Candle Auction at Tatworth.
The book also highlights some of the traditional events which may have dwindled over the years when a community loses interest, a village expands or a church becomes redundant.
Author Tony Foxworthy as a child would with his grandfather guard the maypole at Lanreath in Cornwall against the surrounding villages which would try to steal it.
Customs in Somerset is published by Country Books.
